Long Range Electric Bikes: How Range Is Built (and Verified)

How e-bike range is built: watt-hours, dual batteries, motor efficiency and verifying range claims.

What 'Long Range' Means in Watt-Hours, Not Marketing Miles

When a supplier claims a "100-mile electric bike," the number that matters is not the mileage figure — it is the watt-hour capacity behind it. Watt-hours (Wh) are calculated by multiplying voltage by amp-hours:

Wh = Voltage (V) × Amp-hours (Ah)

A 52V 20Ah battery pack stores 1,040 Wh. Two of them store 2,080 Wh. That stored energy is the raw material of range. Everything else — motor efficiency, tire choice, rider weight, terrain — is a multiplier applied on top.

This is why comparing "miles" across vendors is close to meaningless. Comparing "miles" across vendors without knowing the test conditions is unreliable. Distributors who read packs in watt-hours can compare suppliers on stored energy rather than brochure figures.

As a reference point from our own catalog, the Monster dual-battery fat tire bike carries 52V 20Ah × 2 — roughly 2,080 Wh, a 100+ mile class platform. The D-04 cargo trike carries a single 48V 13Ah pack — about 624 Wh, rated 25–40 miles. Both are honest numbers. The gap between them is the entire lesson of this page.

Dual-Battery Systems Explained

A dual-battery system is not simply "more range." It changes how a bike is specified, wired, and used — and it introduces trade-offs buyers should understand before writing a purchase order.

Series vs. parallel configuration

Dual-battery configurations vary: some draw from packs sequentially, others simultaneously. Confirm the actual configuration in writing and request the wiring architecture for the model you plan to order.

Why OEMs choose dual-battery platforms

Ask the factory about pack sourcing, shipping, replacement, and mounting for dual-battery configurations.

For a deeper look at how pack removal affects charging logistics, fleet rotation, and theft risk, see our [removable battery guide](/blog/removable-battery-guide/).

Motor Efficiency: Mid-Drive vs. Hub at Cruise

Motor choice does not create energy — it determines how much of the battery's watt-hours actually reach the road. Efficiency differences compound directly into range.

Mid-drive

A mid-drive motor drives through the bike's drivetrain and can use the gears; a hub motor drives the wheel directly. In our lineup, the D-04 cargo trike uses a 500W Bafang mid-drive, and the M-08 fat tire uses a 1000W Bafang mid-drive with a 48V 25Ah pack. Ask the factory for route-specific efficiency test data when comparing drive systems for your use case.

There is no universally "better" motor. There is only the motor that matches the route your customers actually ride.

Tires, Weight and Riding Conditions

Once the pack and motor are fixed, four variables decide what real-world range your customers will see.

Tire size and tread

A 20x4.0 or 26x4.0 tire at low pressure has higher rolling resistance than a narrow commuter tire. That resistance is the price of traction on sand, snow, and loose gravel.

The honest framing for a distributor's product page: a fat tire bike delivers off-road capability *and* a range figure measured on fat tires. Do not quote a range number derived from a different tire spec.

Total system weight

Rider, cargo, battery, and frame all count. Two packs double the nominal stored energy; request measured range data for the final configuration.

Terrain and elevation

Every meter of climb costs energy that flat-ground estimates do not capture. A 100+ mile class bike on rolling terrain may deliver a very different figure on a sustained mountain route.

Rider input and assist level

Pedal-assist class bikes depend heavily on how much the rider contributes. Throttle-only riding, high assist levels, and cold weather all reduce usable range. Any credible range claim must state the assist level and rider input assumed.

How Distributors Should Verify Range Claims: Test Protocol Questions

Before signing a PO, ask every supplier these questions in writing. Vague answers are themselves the answer.

  • 1. What is the pack in watt-hours? Voltage × amp-hours, per pack, and total. If they cannot state this immediately, the range claim is marketing.
  • 2. What test route and surface? Flat, rolling, or hilly? Pavement, gravel, or mixed? A number without a route is not a number.
  • 3. What rider and payload weight was assumed? A 150 lb rider and a 250 lb rider with cargo produce different results from the same pack.
  • 4. What assist level and speed? Full assist at 25 mph and eco assist at 12 mph are different products.
  • 5. Was the range measured to full depletion or to a usable floor? Many BMS units cut off before true zero to protect cells, which reduces claimed range.
  • 6. Can we see the test protocol document? A supplier who has actually tested will have one. Certificates and QC records should also be available on request.
  • 7. What is the cell specification and BMS? Capacity is only as good as the cells and the management system protecting them.

FAQ

How many watt-hours is a 52V 20Ah battery?

About 1,040 Wh per pack. Two packs in a dual-battery configuration deliver approximately 2,080 Wh total capacity.

Is a dual-battery bike twice the range of a single-battery bike?

Two packs double the nominal stored energy. Request measured range data for the final configuration.

Which is more efficient for long range — mid-drive or hub?

Ask the factory for efficiency test data for your route profile before choosing between mid-drive and hub.

Does a fat tire bike always have shorter range?

Fat tires have higher rolling resistance than narrow tires, but comparisons should use matched test conditions. Request the test conditions behind any range figure.

What should I ask a supplier before trusting a range claim?

Ask for total watt-hours, the test route and surface, assumed rider and payload weight, assist level and speed, and whether range was measured to full depletion. Request the test protocol document. Suppliers with real data will share it.

Can range claims be customized for our market?

Yes. Battery, motor, tire, and display are all configurable on OEM/ODM orders, and range figures should be re-verified against the final specification rather than carried over from a different build.
